Kansas mother found guilty in 2024 accident that resulted in the death of her 1-year-old child

A 29-year-old mother in Kansas City, Missouri was recently found guilty after admitting no contest to charges arising from a chase last year in northeast Kansas that led to a crash, resulting in the death of her 1-year-old child. Maria C. Papalas entered a no-contest plea in Atchison County District Court on Tuesday, accepting amended charges that included one count of second-degree murder and two counts of aggravated child endangerment. Other charges against her were dropped. The tragic incident occurred on August 25, 2024, when a deputy tried to pull over a car matching the description of a vehicle involved in a prior crash. The driver, identified as Papalas, fled from the deputy, resulting in a rollover crash. Unfortunately, her 1-year-old child, Mixalis Papalas-Schultz, was fatally injured in the accident and passed away two days later at a hospital. Papalas will be sentenced on June 24, and FOX4 has reached out to her attorney for comment on the case.
