Kansas Highway Patrol reports 8 fatalities and 1 injury in US 169 crash near Virginia Road.
The Kansas Highway Patrol and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office were called to a tragic collision just east of U.S. 169 and Virginia Road on Sunday. The incident occurred at approximately 5:40 p.m. when two vehicles crashed head-on and caught on fire. Tragically, eight individuals lost their lives, and one person was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The affected two-lane highway has been closed and is anticipated to remain so for several hours. The northbound lanes of 169 Highway are shut down from 59 Highway in Garnett, and the southbound lanes are closed from 68 Highway in Paola, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
