Kansas City pedestrian killed in drunk driving crash; Independence man charged

A man from Independence, Missouri, is facing charges after allegedly driving under the influence and causing a crash where he struck a pedestrian and flipped his vehicle in Jackson County back in June. The incident reportedly took place near East 38th Terrace and Blue Ridge Cutoff. According to court documents, Jonathan Stone was speeding and recklessly veering through traffic when he lost control of his car and hit a pedestrian who was in a grassy area. Tragically, the pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries and passed away after being taken to a hospital. Witnesses testified that Stone was driving in a dangerous manner, and dashcam footage captured him trying to retrieve a firearm from his car post-crash. Stone later admitted to drinking before driving, stating that he had consumed an excessive amount of alcohol, specifically six shots of Fireball. His blood alcohol concentration tested at 0.176 on a preliminary breath test and 0.114 on a subsequent chemical test. Authorities also noted the smell of alcohol on Stone, along with his slurred speech. In addition to the drunk driving charges, Stone is being looked into for potentially illegally possessing a firearm due to his prior felon status.
