Kansas City committee denies $915K workers' comp payout to firefighter in fatal 2021 crash
Kansas City officials opted not to provide workers compensation to a firefighter who crashed into and killed several people while driving a fire truck in December 2021.The finance committee rejected the settlement Tuesday, which, if also approved by the City Council, would have provided Kansas City firefighter Dominic Biscari with $915,000."We will not move forward in support of this settlement," Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said. "We will hold this item off the docket." Biscari was sentenced to three years of probation for his role in the fatal crash, which happened just days before Christmas.Biscari was driving a fire truck north on Broadway when he entered the intersection at Westport Road with lights and sirens activated, according to court documents. He was traveling 51 mph in a 35 mph zone and ran a red light before striking a Honda CRV.The crash killed two people in the Honda, Jennifer San Nicholas and Michael J. Elwood, and caused the fire truck to collide with three parked vehicles. One of those parked cars hit and killed Tami Knight, who was walking back to her vehicle after dinner. The force of the collision caused part of a building to collapse.Biscari’s attorney argued the crash could have been avoided if the city had invested in safer fire equipment or made the intersection safer.
