Jury delivers verdict on Derrick Thompson's trial for fatal crash

A jury has found Derrick Thompson guilty of causing the deaths of five young women in a high-speed crash in south Minneapolis in June of 2023. Thompson faced five counts of third-degree murder and 10 counts of criminal vehicular homicide. After a trial that lasted five days, the jury reached a verdict on Friday, convicting Thompson of all charges. The incident began when a state trooper noticed Thompson driving erratically at over 100 mph on Interstate 35W in a rented Cadillac. The jury deliberated for a day before delivering their decision. Additionally, the charges were elevated to aggravated. Despite Thompson's defense team claiming that he was not driving at the time of the crash and pointing to his brother as the driver, the jury found him guilty. The impact of the crash was described as severe, with the car carrying the victims completely unrecognizable. Thompson is set to be sentenced on July 24.
