Jurors watch video of upset driver following deadly trooper collision
During the trial of Eddie Jones for the murder of Indiana State Trooper Aaron Smith, jurors were shown police body camera footage capturing Jones' distressed state shortly after he struck and killed the trooper following a high-speed chase in central Indiana. The pursuit on June 28, 2023, involved Jones driving a stolen car at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour through Marion and Hendricks counties. Trooper Smith attempted to stop the vehicle using stop sticks at the Ronald Reagan Parkway overpass, but Jones swerved, hitting Smith who tragically lost his life. Jones' car then crashed, leaving him trapped and pleading for help, expressing regret for his actions. The emotional footage was difficult for Smith's family, with emotions running high in the courtroom. Jones' defense raised questions during cross-examination about ISP training for deploying stop sticks in such scenarios, with former ISP Superintendent Doug Carter emphasizing that troopers must make quick decisions in dynamic situations. Carter praised Trooper Smith's actions, acknowledging the risks involved in high-speed pursuits and the potential for disastrous outcomes. The jury will now hear from an accident reconstruction investigator and watch footage of Jones' interview after his arrest.
