Josh Klinghoffer, former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist, accepts plea bargain in deadly crash

Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, 45, has reached a plea deal following a vehicular manslaughter charge related to a collision that resulted in the death of Israel Sanchez in Alhambra. The incident occurred at the intersection of West Main Street and South Meridian Avenue, where Klinghoffer turned left and struck Sanchez, who was walking in a marked crosswalk. In court, Klinghoffer pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence and was sentenced to 60 days of community labor, one year of informal probation, a driver safety course, and restitution. The prosecutor cautioned Klinghoffer on the dangers of distracted driving, emphasizing the serious consequences that could result from such behavior. The civil suit filed by Sanchez's family alleges that Klinghoffer was on his phone at the time of the collision, pointing to video evidence suggesting distracted driving. Klinghoffer's attorney emphasized that the incident was a tragic accident and highlighted Klinghoffer's immediate response in assisting the victim and cooperating with authorities. Klinghoffer played guitar with the Red Hot Chili Peppers from 2009 to 2019 before John Frusciante returned, and has since performed with bands like Jane's Addiction and Pearl Jam.
