JCPD reports increase in I-26 crashes but zero fatal accidents
Johnson City, Tennessee - The Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) announced updates on the progress of the "A Safer Drive in '25" campaign, a joint effort with the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) that commenced in 2025 following last year's "A Safer 26 in '24" initiative. JCPD Police Chief Billy Church noted an increase in crashes this year but emphasized that there have been no fatalities on I-26. The rise in overall crash rates highlights the importance of prioritizing the safety campaign. The JCPD shared data on traffic stops, citations issued, and crash incidents from January 26 to June 9. Addressing common issues of speeding and distracted driving, JCPD Master Police Officer Nick Lyons highlighted the significant impact drivers have on roadway safety. The collaboration with THP will continue as efforts to improve traffic safety persist.
