Jaywalking continues in area where 10-year-old was hit, killed by driver

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Neighbors expressed concern over the persistent jaywalking from pedestrians on Sunday, just three days after a 10-year-old was struck and killed along East Charleston Boulevard near Fremont Street. Las Vegas police said on Thursday night, after the child’s death, that he was not inside a designated crosswalk at the time of the accident. On Sunday, several people were spotted crossing the median from the nearby Siegel Suites to a shopping center along Charleston Boulevard. Locals said it’s common and becoming increasingly dangerous. “I always have to stop or yell at them when they do it,” said Idegsis Garrido, who’s been living in the area for two years. She said people of all ages, pedestrians, jaywalk. But she particularly notices families and children coming to and from nearby apartment complexes. “The people that live in Siegel Suites think it’s okay to cross this way. So they’re literally always doing it,” Garrido said. The 10-year old, who has not been identified, died crossing before 7 p.m. on Mar. 5. Police said the driver who struck the boy remained on scene and cooperated with the investigators. “My kids walk these streets every day and I keep telling them that you have to be aware. You have to stay on the sidewalk. But kids are going to be kids. They don't think about these things at the end at the end of the day,” said Maranda Martin, a neighbor who spoke with 8 News Now after the accident on Thursday night. Police said the child’s death was the 25th traffic-related fatality so far in 2026 in Metro Police’s jurisdiction.
