Investigation: Aircraft rolled moments before fatal accident in Zeeland Township

A recent plane crash in Zeeland Township resulted in the tragic death of an 80-year-old pilot last month. The incident took place during takeoff at Ottawa Executive Airport, where the National Transportation Safety Board's initial findings indicated that the plane rolled as it began its ascent. The pilot, Robert Fidler, was witnessed by others filling the tank of his self-built Lancair 360 aircraft before taking off from runway 20. Unfortunately, the plane veered off course post-takeoff, leading to a steep bank angle and eventual crash just east of the runway center. Fidler, the sole occupant, did not survive the impact. The NTSB's preliminary report outlined the location of various wreckage parts and details of the crash aftermath, including thermal damage to the engine. The investigation is ongoing, with a full NTSB report expected within 1-2 years. Fidler, known for his piloting expertise, had constructed the two-seater aircraft in 2022, with FAA approval received in October 2023.
