Initial findings on Copake plane crash in April disclosed
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently published a preliminary report on a tragic plane crash in Copake, N.Y., which resulted in the loss of six lives. The report details that the Mitsubishi MU-2B-40 aircraft crashed nose-first into a snow-covered agricultural field near State Route 23 and Two Town Road. As the plane approached Columbia County Airport, it was cleared to descend, but shortly after, air traffic control lost contact with the pilot and the radar signal of the aircraft. Pieces of the plane were found scattered within a 150-foot radius of the crash site, with all major components contained within the wreckage. Surveillance footage captured the plane descending rapidly through a low-overcast cloud layer. Despite no significant weather advisories in the area, the NTSB highlighted prevailing low-level wind shear and occasional moderate icing conditions. The victims of the crash were described as a "close-knit family of physicians and distinguished student-athletes" by the Associated Press. The NTSB plans to release a more comprehensive report on the incident in the upcoming months.
