Indy 500 driver and NASCAR owner Shigeaki Hattori dies in car crash
Renowned racer and successful team owner Shige Hattori passed away after being involved in a multi-car accident on I-77 northbound in Mecklenburg County, near Charlotte, North Carolina. The tragedy occurred when Hattori's 2025 Toyota Crown crossed the center line, resulting in a collision with another vehicle. Thankfully, everyone else involved sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Although he moved from Japan to the United States in 1995 to pursue a career in American open-wheel racing, Hattori later transitioned to stock car racing, achieving notable success as the owner of Hattori Racing Enterprises. The team excelled in the NASCAR Truck Series, securing 14 victories, with their standout moment being Brett Moffitt's 2018 championship win. Despite stepping back from full-time competition in 2023, Hattori's impact on NASCAR's lower divisions remains significant.
