Indian-American truck driver causes 8-car crash, resulting in 3 fatalities

A truck driver of Indian origin has been charged with causing a fatal crash on a US freeway resulting in three deaths and four injuries. The driver, Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old illegal immigrant, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. Singh has been accused of causing a major collision in California's Ontario and is facing charges of driving under the influence of drugs, causing bodily harm, and vehicular manslaughter. This incident follows a similar crash involving another illegal immigrant from Punjab in Florida. Singh illegally entered the US in 2022 and had encounters with border patrol before being released under the Biden administration's policy for alternatives to detention for pending deportation hearings. At the time of the crash on the 10 Freeway in San Bernardino County, Singh was reportedly driving a large truck under the influence of drugs, causing a multi-vehicle pile-up. Authorities found drugs in Singh's system through toxicology reports and he was taken into custody for driving under the influence. The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement has sought Singh's custody due to his illegal immigrant status, and he is being held in San Bernardino County without bail. It is not clear if Singh had a valid commercial driver's license.
