Immigration policies blamed for deaths of two Wisconsin teens.
A migrant from Honduras, Noelia Saray Martinez-Avila, faces deportation after being accused of driving under the influence and causing a crash that resulted in the deaths of two teenagers in Dane County, Wisconsin. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued a detainer against Martinez-Avila, who is charged in connection with the tragic incident that claimed the lives of Hallie Helgeson and Brady Heiling. Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin expressed deep sorrow for the loss of the young victims and emphasized ICE's decision to place an arrest detainer on Martinez-Avila to address the threat to public safety she poses. The accused faces multiple charges, including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, and ICE is working to ensure she is removed from the U.S. Given the sanctuary jurisdiction policies in Dane County, the fulfillment of ICE detainers has been problematic in the past.
