Identity Revealed in Deadly ATV vs. Deer Collision in Polk County
Sheriff Brent Waak of Polk County has identified the individual who tragically passed away in an ATV accident on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. The rider was John Smith, aged 70, from rural Balsam Lake, Wisconsin. The incident took place at 3:34 p.m. on 150th Avenue, just east of County H in the town of Apple River, where Smith's ATV collided with a deer. Sadly, Smith, who was not wearing a helmet, succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash. The Wisconsin DNR and Polk County Sheriff’s Office are conducting an inquiry into the matter, with support from Apple River Fire, Northwestern Municipal EMS, and the Polk County Medical Examiner. Sheriff Waak is emphasizing the importance of wearing helmets and practicing caution while operating ATVs on local roads.
