Identification of some victims in fatal I-35 accident
The video above showcases KXAN's recent report on the fatal I-35 collision in north Austin on March 13. Travis County authorities confirmed on Tuesday the identities of three victims from the incident: Sergieo Daniel Lopez, 32, Natalia Helana Perez, 25, and Ma Concepcion Joaquin De Joaquin, 78, were among the five individuals who lost their lives. The crash, which involved 18 vehicles including several semi-trucks, resulted in the closure of the interstate for around 14 hours and left 11 others injured. According to information from a police affidavit, Joaquin De Joaquin was seated in the rear left of a green Chevrolet truck with two other individuals and the impact from being rear-ended was so severe that the rear seats nearly reached the front. The driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital with rib and spinal fractures. Lopez and Perez were passengers in a silver Volkswagen with an infant and a child at the time of the accident. Investigators remarked that the extent of damage to their vehicle rendered it unrecognizable. The children's identities have not been disclosed publicly. The driver of the semi-truck believed to have caused the crash was reportedly impaired by drugs, as indicated by the arrest affidavit. Authorities allege that he failed to decelerate for the traffic congestion caused by lane closures due to construction work. The 37-year-old has been charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle involving severe bodily harm connected to the collision.
