Ian Cramer sentenced on additional charges related to 2023 fatal crash with deputy

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Ian Cramer was sentenced to an additional 20 years in prison for actions stemming from a car chase and crash that killed a Mercer County deputy in 2023. Late last year, Cramer was sentenced to 28 years in prison for the death of the deputy and eight other charges. Monday, he was sentenced in Burleigh County court for additional charges stemming from that incident, including Theft, Criminal Mischief and Reckless Endangerment. Ian Cramer is North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer's son. On December 6, 2023, Ian Cramer's mother was taking him to the Sanford Emergency Room after he had stopped taking anti-psychotic medication. But when she parked the vehicle and got out, Cramer slid into the driver's seat and took off, smashing the bay door at the hospital and, according to police, narrowly missed hitting a woman who had walked by. According to an affidavit, Ian Cramer rammed the bay doors open at the hospital when he drove off, causing about $12,000 in damages. Cramer sped west, where police and deputies tried stopping him in Hazen. That's when Cramer struck the parked vehicle of Mercer County deputy Paul Martin, killing him. Today, he was sentenced to 10 years for theft and 10 years for criminal mischief, with all 20 years suspended. He will also be on probation for three years.
