I-40 east reopens after fallen tree near Aviation Parkway near Raleigh; crash develops in westbound lanes
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- A tree fell onto Interstate 40 on Wednesday afternoon, blocking several eastbound lanes for about 25 minutes near mile marker 285 near Aviation Parkway just outside Raleigh. But, in the westbound traffic back-ups on the opposite side of I-40, a crash appeared to happen during the tree clean-up. The tree incident was reported at 2:50 p.m., closing three right lanes just east of Aviation Parkway, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. A photo taken by CBS 17 showed several workers at the scene cutting up a tree that appeared to smash a guardrail. There were fire engines on the scene from Cary and Morrisville and two NCDOT vehicles. Eastbound traffic was backed up more than a mile. All but one lane appeared to reopen by 3:15 p.m. Meanwhile, a wreck appeared in the westbound lanes in the same area. At least two cars and two emergency vehicles were visible near the center divider in the westbound lanes. There was no word about any injuries in the incident.
