Hockey player from Long Island determined to return to the ice after a near-fatal accident
A high school hockey player from Long Island is on the road to recovery after a serious accident occurred away from the rink. Connor Dubeau, a senior at Smithtown West High School, faced a life-threatening situation when he broke a bone in his neck while diving into rocky waters at Gilgo Beach last summer. Despite initial fears of paralysis, Connor showed his determination to overcome the situation, stating that he tried to get up but couldn't move. Quick thinking and brave actions by his teammate Kevin Bonino, who had recently become a lifeguard, were crucial in saving Connor from running out of oxygen in the water. The ordeal took an emotional toll on both Connor and his father Mark, who recalled the harrowing experience followed by the relief of seeing his son walking again just two days after successful surgery. Though he has yet to return to the ice, Connor remains committed to his team by attending practices and receiving support from NHL players like P. K. Subban, demonstrating his resilience and passion for the sport.
