Hit-and-run suspect arrested for deadly crash that set motorcyclist on fire in San Bernardino County

A hit-and-run suspect was arrested for a deadly crash that set a motorcyclist on fire in Redlands. Authorities identified the suspect driver as Victor Gonzalez, 24. On June 9, Redlands police were called to a crash on Highway 38 between Amethyst and Garnet streets around 5:30 p.m. The victim, a 73-year-old motorcyclist, had collided with another vehicle and he was ejected from his bike. Fuel began leaking from the damaged motorcycle and eventually caught fire, setting both the bike and the 73-year-old man on fire. Bystanders rushed to help the victim and worked to put out the flames. Someone also performed CPR on the victim until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was only identified as a Redlands resident. The suspect driver fled the scene without checking on the victim.  Detectives used video from a witness’ dash cam and nearby traffic cameras to identify the suspect and his vehicle. On June 11, Gonzalez was arrested at his home on the 7800 block of McKinley Avenue.  His car, a gold-colored 2008 Mercedes-Benz C30 with extensive collision damage to the driver’s side was also found at the home, covered by a tarp. No further details were released as the incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Redlands Police Dispatch at 909-798-7681.
