Hit-and-run incident results in arrest after woman dies, husband injured in Volusia County
A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with a severe hit-and-run collision in January that resulted in the death of a female pedestrian and serious injuries to a male pedestrian near 4 North Causeway. The New Smyrna Beach Police Department reported that Mark J. Ruth, a local resident, allegedly veered off the road onto the sidewalk, striking both pedestrians as they were walking in the same direction. Ruth is charged with offenses including vehicular homicide, reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of a crash, and possession of a controlled substance. He is currently in custody without bail at the Volusia County Branch Jail awaiting his initial court appearance. Police Chief Chris Kirk described the event as witnesses observed the vehicle traveling down the sidewalk, colliding with various obstacles and the pedestrians. The incident was described as traumatic for all involved, including witnesses who saw the tragedy unfold.
