Hiking trail reopens following fatal Windham plane crash investigation

WINDHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Escarpment Trail in the Windham-Blackhead Range Wilderness in Catskill Park is now fully open, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). The trail between the Elm Ridge Lean-to and the Windham High Peak had been closed for several months following the fatal Windham plane crash in November 2024. An aircraft recovery company was seen removing the remaining crash wreckage from the trail on April 22. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which had retained the remaining wreckage for further examination, had documented the remnants and they will now be moved to a secure location, the agency told NEWS10. The NTSB published a preliminary report into the plane crash in December 2024. Commercial pilot Seuk Kim and one of three dogs that were being transported on the flight were fatally injured in the November 24 incident. The final report into the crash, which will include the probable cause and any contributing factors, is expected to be completed within one to two years. The Escarpment Trail, located in Catskill Park, is open year round and is free to the public.
