Helicopter tour firm closes after fatal Hudson River crash: FAA
New York Helicopter Tours, the company that owned the helicopter that tragically crashed into the Hudson River last week, resulting in the loss of all six lives on board, is ceasing operations immediately as directed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA stated on Sunday that they will be assisting the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in their thorough investigation of the accident, while also conducting a prompt assessment of the tour operator’s license and safety history. Additionally, the FAA plans to address helicopter safety nationwide by hosting a safety panel on April 22 to explore potential risks and mitigation strategies. Emphasizing their commitment to ensuring public safety, the FAA also announced their intent to take swift action as needed. The tragic incident involved a Bell 206L-4 LongRanger IV helicopter that broke apart midair before crashing into the river near Jersey City, claiming the lives of a Spanish family of five and the experienced pilot. The NTSB is continuing their investigation and recovery efforts with assistance from various authorities and industry experts, as more details about the incident come to light.
