‘He died in my arms’: Family of TSA worker killed in I-225 crash pleads for answers
AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) -- A trip to the airport turned into tragedy for one Colorado family after a crash along Interstate 225 left a beloved husband dead and others injured. Police said the crash happened northbound on I-225 near East Iliff Avenue in Aurora. According to a preliminary investigation, a Toyota Corolla, being used as a rideshare, rear-ended a Chevy Silverado. The Corolla then overturned and slid onto the shoulder. Inside the rideshare were three people, including Eduardo “Eddy” Morales and his wife. Morales was killed at the scene. His wife and the driver were both taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Investigators said after the crash, the people inside the Silverado got out and ran from the scene. No one has been identified, cited or arrested. Police said speed is believed to be a factor, and the investigation is ongoing. Eddy's wife, Megan, said the couple had just gotten onto the highway early Saturday morning on their way to the airport for a long-planned trip to Miami. Megan said, "Within a minute of getting on the highway, we just bam, got hit.” The couple had been looking forward to the trip for months, a chance to see family and spend time together. Instead, Megan said she watched her husband take his last breath. “My husband died in my arms," she said. Eddy was a TSA employee at Denver International Airport and is remembered by his family as someone who held everyone together. “He was the glue that held his family together," said Megan. "He helped hold me together.” Now, instead of a vacation, his loved ones are planning a funeral. Jessica Morales, Eddy's sister, said, “We now plan his final arrangements… we should have been planning dinner tonight.” The family said they believe the people who left the scene may have been injured, suffering what they believe to be a facial injury. They are urging them or anyone who saw what happened, to come forward. “You’ve ruined so many lives," said Megan. "Just come forward." Police are asking anyone with information about the crash or the identities of the people who left the Silverado to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers. A GoFundMe created by the family has already raised thousands of dollars to help cover funeral expenses as they navigate both grief and an ongoing investigation.
