Hazmat spill causes lane closures on Highway 280 in Los Altos.
A collision on Interstate Highway 280 in Los Altos resulted in a hazardous material incident and the closure of multiple lanes on Thursday afternoon, authorities confirmed. The event occurred on southbound 280 near the Magdalena Avenue exit around 12:52 p.m. The California Highway Patrol reported that a truck transporting barrels of bleach and muriatic acid struck the median barrier, causing the barrels to leak post-collision. Initially, all southbound lanes were shut down, with traffic redirected to the Magdalena Avenue off-ramp. With one lane reopened by 1:53 p.m., it was estimated that additional lanes would resume in two to three hours. The Santa Clara County Fire Department revealed that two northbound lanes of I-280 in the vicinity were also closed for hazmat processing. As of 3:40 p.m., two northbound lanes and one southbound lane were clear, and drivers were advised to avoid the area for roughly the next two hours. Authorities assured the public that there was no danger from the spill. The individuals in the truck were able to exit on their own and did not sustain injuries. The cause of the accident remained under investigation.
