In Laupāhoehoe on the Big Island of Hawai'i, a County of Hawai‘i Hele-On bus crashed on Tuesday morning along Māmalahoa Highway (Highway 19). The incident occurred when the bus rolled backward at mile marker 25.5, went through a guardrail, and landed on its side after picking up passengers at a lookout. The driver, a 66-year-old man from Hilo, stated he had stopped at Laupāhoehoe Scenic Lookout to let passengers on board and had exited the bus when it unexpectedly rolled backward and fell down a hill. Emergency responders assisted all 22 passengers who were taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, with the most serious injury being a minor hand laceration to an elderly male passenger. The driver is employed by Roberts Hawai'i, and authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, with no serious injuries reported.
