German train derails, causing 3 deaths following heavy rain-triggered landslide
In southern Germany, a tragic incident occurred on Sunday when a regional express train derailed, resulting in the loss of three lives and injuries to at least 41 individuals. Authorities suspect the derailment was caused by a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall. The accident took place in a wooded area between Sigmaringen and Ulm in Baden-Württemberg state. Despite rescue efforts, the train carrying around 100 passengers encountered mud and debris on the tracks from the landslide, leading to two carriages derailing. The victims, including the train's driver, a railway trainee, and a passenger, were identified, and multiple injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals. Weather specialists noted exceptionally high rainfall in the area, with up to 10 gallons per square yard falling within a short period on Sunday. Officials are analyzing data from the train's recorder to better understand the circumstances. Chancellor Friedrich Merz offered condolences to the victims' families, with assurances of support for rescue operations, while Deutsche Bahn expressed shock and committed to assisting authorities in their investigation.
