Gadsden ISD student's death mourned during fatal crash investigation.

The Gadsden Independent School District is deeply saddened by the passing of a Gadsden High School student, who tragically lost their life over the weekend. The student, who was in 9th grade, was a valued member of the GHS community, where an older sibling is currently in 11th grade. Authorities shared with KTSM that the student was involved in a traffic accident in Vado, New Mexico. Following the incident, the New Mexico Department of Transportation announced the closure of NM Highway 478 at Franco Road due to a car crash. New Mexico State Police reported responding to a single-vehicle accident at around 6:50 p.m. on Sunday, involving a vehicle hitting a light pole and coming to a stop in front of a residence along Highway 478. The investigation into the accident is ongoing, with the names of the individuals involved not yet disclosed. Authorities detained Christina Escobedo-Arriaga, 33, on charges related to the incident. District officials extended their sympathies to those affected by the loss, with Superintendent Travis Dempsey noting, “Our hearts are shattered.” To provide support during this challenging period, the district has arranged for counselors, wellness specialists, and mental health professionals to assist the Gadsden High School community. These resources are open to students and staff members requiring assistance, with the district encouraging those struggling to seek help.
