Funeral services announced for pilot killed in Westerly plane crash
WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) — The investigation continues into a plane crash that killed a 21-year-old Charlestown man earlier this week. Certified flight instructor Isaac Seekell was attempting to land at Westerly State Airport Monday afternoon when the plane he was flying crashed in a field just short of the runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Seekell, who was by himself in the plane, was rushed to Westerly Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. It's unclear exactly what caused the crash, though the FAA confirmed Seekell was trying to make an emergency landing. Seekell leaves behind his parents and four siblings, as well as his girlfriend who he was planning to propose to, according to his obituary. His obituary states Seekell graduated from Veritas Press Scholars Academy and the Community College of Rhode Island. He went on to study at the Word of Life Bible Institute, where he played as a goalkeeper on the men's soccer team and earned a Certificate of Biblical Foundations. "He was passionate about sharing the gospel in open-air evangelism, international missions trips and with those he met as he walked through his daily life," his obituary reads, noting that he was actively involved in the ministry of Perryville Bible Church. Seekell worked at Westerly Aviation, where he taught students fundamental flight maneuvers and provided advanced instruction on flying in low visibility conditions, his obituary states. He also worked as a high school and club level soccer referee for the town of Narragansett. "Isaac always loved an exciting adventure," his obituary states. "Whether he was flying, rock-climbing, riding his motorcycle, or on a remote canoe trip, he loved the joy of being outdoors and experiencing all that life had to offer. He loved to hike, weight train, complete woodworking projects, and fix anything mechanical." Seekell was also a "talented musician" who knew how to play the piano, guitar and trumpet. His obituary adds that he "was always seeking to learn and grow in his understanding of everything from practical life to advanced professional skills." "Those closest to him describe him as humble, servant-hearted, and intentional in relationships," his obituary continues. "He had a playful, quick-witted spirit that often brought smiles and laughter to others." Calling hours will take place Tuesday, May 26, between 3-7 p.m. at Avery-Sorti Funeral Home. Seekell's funeral is scheduled for the following day at 10 a.m. at Perryville Bible Church. His burial will be private. The Charlestown Ambulance Rescue Service created a GoFundMe to assist Seekell's family throughout this difficult time. So far, it's raised more than $30,000. In a social media post Thursday morning, Seekell's mother thanked everyone for showing their support "with no lack of genuine compassion and respect." "Though the ache and sorrow is overwhelming, we have yet to feel alone," Amy Seekell wrote. Download the WPRI 12 and Pinpoint Weather 12 apps to get breaking news and weather alerts.
