Fourth US soldier discovered deceased following training mishap in Lithuania
The U.S. military announced on Tuesday that the final missing soldier in Lithuania has been found deceased, concluding a large-scale search effort for the four service members whose vehicle was recovered from a swampy training area. The bodies of the other three soldiers were discovered the day before, following a collaborative recovery operation involving U.S., Polish, and Lithuanian armed forces. The soldiers were identified as Sgt. Jose Duenez Jr., Sgt. Edvin F. Franco, and Pfc. Dante D. Taitano. The fourth soldier's identity has not yet been released. The soldiers were part of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, participating in a training exercise when they were reported missing. Maj. Gen. Christopher Norrie expressed deep sorrow over the loss and thanked the allies who aided in the search and recovery efforts. The soldiers were part of a deployment under Operation Atlantic Resolve, supporting NATO allies and partners in the region after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
