Robert Rogers with the Langston Fire Department. The injured firefighters — Chief Bobby Anderson, Assistant Chief Brian Orndoff, Captain Jay Bartles, and firefighter Eric Abrams — had traveled to Enid to help their fellow Oklahomans after the tornado struck. “It’s an internal thing. We all feel we knew that there were people that needed help up there. Our brothers on the Unit Fire Department needed our help. Help those people. And they would come if we needed them,” Rogers said. On their way home, the firefighters’ vehicle was struck head-on by a semi-truck, leaving all four injured. Anderson remains hospitalized, and the Langston community is deeply affected by the incident. “Knowing that someone has been hurt on duty, on the line of duty, is really heartbreaking for me to have to be able to understand, like, the impact that it is causing not just on the community, but on their families,” said Langston Mayor Misty MayesDespite the challenges, the Langston Fire Department is grateful that the situation was not worse. “We will get through this, as many other departments have before. It’s a learning curve. It’s one no department hopes to go through, but we’re thankful at this moment that we didn’t have to have a worse situation given the situation that we had,” Rogers said.
