Florida converts truck weigh stations into ICE inspection points after fatal Turnpike collision
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has announced that all state truck weigh stations will now be used as federal immigration checkpoints in response to a tragic crash on Florida's Turnpike involving a truck driver who was in the U.S. illegally. Uthmeier plans to request the federal government to revoke commercial driver's license program authority and funding from California and Washington for granting CDLs to the driver involved in the crash. The truck driver, Harjinder Singh, has been charged with vehicular homicide and immigration violations after the crash that claimed three lives. In light of this incident, Florida officials, including Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, are ramping up inspections at state entry-points for immigrants operating large trucks using out-of-state driver's licenses. FDACS officers are now trained under the federal 287(g) immigration program to work together with federal and state partners at these checkpoints, ensuring a more thorough check on drivers' qualifications and immigration status to prevent similar tragedies.
