Florida charges suspect in fatal turnpike crash, escorted by lieutenant governor from California.
A man has been accused of causing a fatal accident on Florida’s Turnpike and is being extradited back to the state to face charges. Harjinder Singh is alleged to have made an illegal U-turn with a tractor-trailer on the Turnpike in St. Lucie County on August 12, resulting in the deaths of three individuals in a minivan. Florida's newly appointed Lt. Gov. Jay Collins condemned Singh, highlighting his 2018 illegal entry into the U.S. and subsequent acquisition of a commercial driver’s license in California, which he should not have had. Collins also criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom’s immigration policies for endangering Americans. Singh failed a language test after the crash, correctly answering only two of 12 verbal questions and identifying just one of four highway traffic signs. Despite criticism labeling his actions as political theater, Collins defended his efforts to ensure justice and safety. Governor Newsom's office responded to the visit, indicating that California had to intervene in the case. The timeline for Singh's return to Florida and booking into St. Lucie County Jail remains uncertain.
