Florida bill aims to crack down on undocumented truck drivers following deadly Turnpike crash
Following a tragic accident on Florida's Turnpike last month that claimed the lives of three individuals, a Florida Senate Republican has introduced a new bill aimed at addressing issues related to truck drivers who are undocumented immigrants. Sen. Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, filed the bill (SB 86) for consideration during the upcoming 2026 legislative session set to begin in January. The proposed legislation includes measures such as mandatory custody and vehicle impoundment for truck drivers known to be undocumented immigrants. Law enforcement officers would be required to detain these drivers and assist in their transfer to federal immigration authorities. Additionally, trucks operated by undocumented immigrants who are apprehended would face impoundment, while the owners would be subject to a $50,000 fine and prohibited from operating in Florida. The bill was prompted by a recent incident involving a semi-truck driver from India, Harjinder Singh, who was arrested after causing a fatal crash by attempting a U-turn on the turnpike in St. Lucie County.
