Florida Attorney General plans to tighten immigration rules for truckers in California and Washington following fatal collision.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is urging the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) to halt commercial driver’s license programs in California and Washington due to concerns that these states are not enforcing federal English-language requirements for truck drivers. This call to action follows a fatal accident on Florida’s Turnpike involving Harjinder Singh, a truck driver who was reportedly in the country illegally, unable to communicate in English, and unaware of basic road signs. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy disclosed that an inquiry revealed significant lapses in the implementation of new licensing regulations tied to a recent executive order by President Donald Trump in California, Washington, and New Mexico. Failure to comply with these regulations may lead to the states losing substantial federal funding. Attorney General Uthmeier highlighted the risks posed to Floridians by sanctuary states and urged for stricter measures, such as decertifying the CDL programs in California and Washington. He emphasized that ensuring adherence to English proficiency and road sign comprehension standards is crucial for public safety and vowed to hold Singh’s employer accountable. Uthmeier stressed the importance of enforcing licensing rules, warning that similar tragedies could occur unless states face consequences for non-compliance.
