Flight cancellations rise after Air India crash kills 270.
A number of Air India Dreamliner flights, including a route from Ahmedabad to London that had resumed after an accident on June 12, were not operational on Tuesday due to various technical issues. This disrupted the airline's schedules amidst regulatory checks and the closure of airspace on certain sectors. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) revealed that since June 12, 66 Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights (the type of aircraft involved in the crash) were canceled by the airline out of a total of 83 cancellations affecting their broader widebody fleet. There were cancellations before Thursday’s crash, with the airline faced with around four cancellations per day in 2024 due to technical or operational reasons. The DGCA held discussions with Air India and Air India Express regarding safety checks on their Dreamliner fleet post the crash. The recent cancellations were due to unavailability of aircraft, delays in turnaround affected by airspace restrictions, and additional precautionary checks. The airline is working on implementing enhanced safety measures and collaboratively investigating the crash. Efforts are in place to complete safety checks on the Dreamliner fleet. Disruptions have also been caused due to route-related issues and mandatory pre-flight checks affecting other flights such as Delhi to Paris and San Francisco to Mumbai. The airline assured that they are providing assistance to affected passengers by offering refunds or rescheduling options.
