Five-car crash leads to arrest of man accused of inhaling duster
HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) - A man from Morton's Gap is facing charges in Madisonville after authorities say he hit several vehicles and passed out from inhaling duster fumes. According to the Madisonville Police Department, a patrol officer radioed dispatch just before 1:40 p.m. on Monday to report that someone hit his vehicle, as well as multiple other vehicles on north Main Street. Officers arrived at the scene and spoke to the suspect, John Oakley, 21, who said he did not remember anything from the collision. Authorities noted that Oakley could not sit still on the curb, and stood up multiple times after he was asked to sit down. Police say Oakley told officers there was alcohol in his car, he was on probation, the collision was his fault and that he knew he would be going to jail. Oakley reportedly failed a field sobriety test, however authorities said a breath test indicated no presence of alcohol in his system. After submitting to a blood draw, authorities say Oakley confessed to purchasing air duster and inhaling the fumes before driving his vehicle. Oakley was booked into the Hopkins County Jail and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence, possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle, volatile substance abuse, assault, wanton endangerment and criminal mischief. According to a report, one person who was injured during the crash had internal bleeding and had to be taken to a hospital by helicopter. Another person injured in the crash had "significant injuries" to their side, including several broken ribs.
