First 'Rust' trailer features shoot-out after Alec Baldwin's fatal accident

The first Rust movie trailer has been released, and it's a heart-stopping minute of gun violence. The western film, on the set of which cinematographer Halyna Hutchins lost her life in an accidental shooting by the movie's star Alec Baldwin, features Baldwin as a tough outlaw on the run."Some things in this life you can't get back, I reckon," Baldwin's character, Harland Rust, says in the clip. The eerie minute of film features a brutal shoot-out between multiple characters, and the footage ends with the sounds of bullets being fired. Rust's grandson, Lucas (portrayed by 15-year-old Patrick Scott McDermott) is also seen carrying a rifle several times in the teaser. In the movie, Lucas accidentally fatally shoots a man and is sentenced to hanging. Rust comes out of hiding to save him, and the two go on the run. The movie takes place in Wyoming, but was filmed in New Mexico, where the film's real-life accidental shooting took place.Baldwin — the movie's writer, producer and star — was indicted on an involuntary manslaughter charge for the 2021 accidental shooting of Hutchins. During the rehearsal for a scene in which Baldwin's character was supposed to draw a gun and point it directly at the camera, a live round was discharged by the actor from a prop revolver. The actor said that not only was he unaware that the gun was loaded with anything but blanks, but he did not pull the trigger. Joel Souza — the movie's co-writer and co-director — was also injured in the incident. The judge dismissed the case against Baldwin in July 2024, but the movie's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison.Filming resumed on the western in 2023, after Hutchins' family reached an agreement with Baldwin and producers. As part of the agreement, her husband, Matthew Hutchins, became the film's executive director. Bianca Cline finished the film's cinematography.Rust — which also stars Josh Hopkins, Travis Fimmel and Frances Fisher — hits theaters on May 2.
