Fire truck in Fort Worth struck while protecting crash scene; officials credit position with saving lives
Moments after firefighters in Fort Worth responded to a crash early on Saturday, a truck collided with their parked engine. Officials say that the positioning of the engine played a crucial role in potentially saving lives. The incident took place when Engines 5 and 14 were called to a single-vehicle accident at the U.S. 287 interchange southeast of downtown Fort Worth. Engine 14 discovered the crash and parked at a 45-degree angle to shield the scene from oncoming traffic. According to the Fort Worth Fire Department, this tactic likely protected the lives of both the first responders and the driver involved in the initial crash. The occupants of the truck were rescued by firefighters and transported to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, no firefighters were harmed, and the original crash driver was unharmed. Fire officials urge the public to practice safe driving habits, such as avoiding distractions like texting or drinking while driving and to adhere to the law by slowing down and changing lanes when emergency vehicle lights are visible. CBS News Texas will share further updates as they become available.
