Fire chief from Alpine Township injured in off-duty incident, uniting department support
The Alpine Township Fire Department is coming together in support of Fire Chief Dave Klomparens, who sustained a serious head injury in an off-duty accident in April. Klomparens, affectionately known as "Klompy," is currently recovering at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids. Deputy Chief Jeremy Kelly praised Klomparens' level-headedness and compassion for patients he encounters. The accident occurred when Klomparens, who also works as a woodworker, missed a step while exiting a van. Despite the difficulties faced by some department members who responded to the call, they are united in supporting their chief, who has dedicated nearly 25 years to the department, including serving as chief since 2012. The department is rallying around Klomparens and his family, with colleagues stepping in to help manage responsibilities as he recuperates, and plans are underway for a benefit named "Backing the Chief" to assist with medical expenses.
