Final Report Released by NTSB on I-95 Collapse in 2023
A truck driver carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline lost control of the vehicle on an off-ramp from I-95, causing the truck to flip and catch fire underneath the highway. The fire heated the road, leading to a collapse of the highway. The NTSB thoroughly investigated the accident and released its final report, detailing how the driver lost control while exiting the highway at the Cottman Avenue exit. The truck's speed was above advised limits on the ramp, resulting in the accident. Governor Josh Shapiro labeled the aftermath as "remarkable devastation", declaring a disaster emergency for the area to expedite repairs. The closure of the highway caused traffic issues, prompting officials to develop alternate routes. With federal support, resources were deployed to repair and reconstruct I-95 efficiently. Through the efforts of a Delaware County company, truckloads of aggregate were brought in to bridge the gap on the highway. Governor Shapiro reopened the northbound lanes in a ceremony, with the permanent reopening of all lanes occurring on May 23, 2024, less than a year after the incident.
