Fiery Highway 4 crash in Brentwood kills 2
BRENTWOOD, Calif. (KRON) -- Two people are dead after a fiery crash on Highway 4 in Brentwood Wednesday night. Both directions of the highway between Balfour and Marsh Creek roads were shut down before reopening around 5:20 a.m. Thursday. Two vehicles collided head-on at around 10 p.m. Wednesday after one of the vehicles was traveling on the wrong side of the highway, according to the California Highway Patrol. The drivers of both vehicles were pronounced deceased at the scene. One of the vehicles involved is an electric vehicle, according to officers, and its battery burst into flames in the collision. Due to the battery fire, a hazmat team from Lafayette responded to the crash scene. Responders monitored the toxic fluoride gas that comes from the battery. “The batteries release a gas that leaches the calcium out of your bones,” Contra Costa County Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Burris said. The names of the drivers have not been released. Detours were in place Wednesday night and Thursday morning that took drivers off of Highway 4 and through Brentwood. This is a developing story.
