Federal investigators suspect driver fatigue in fatal 18-wheeler crash on I-20 linked to Florida carrier
Federal investigators are looking into potential driver fatigue as a factor in a fatal crash on I-20 near Terrell involving a truck driver from Florida and his employer, Hope Trans LLC. The National Transportation Safety Board, alongside the Texas Department of Public Safety, has launched a safety probe into the incident that tragically claimed the lives of five individuals. The driver, Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, who is employed by Hope Trans LLC, operates out of the Orlando area. The company, active since 2021, currently runs 65 trucks and employs 80 drivers, maintaining compliance with federal safety regulations. Despite being involved in prior crashes resulting in injuries, none were fatal until this recent incident. Hope Trans LLC's performance in driver compliance checks slightly surpasses the national average, with 5% of their drivers found "out of service" in federal inspections, compared to the national average of 6.7%. The company has not incurred severe violations for hours-of-service compliance or driver fitness according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, which sets guidelines such as a 12-hour driving limit within a 70-hour week for commercial truckers. The investigation by the NTSB is ongoing, raising questions about potential actions that could have averted the crash and if any warning signs were overlooked.
