Father, son killed in crash on I-24 near Rutherford County

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A son and his father were killed in a rollover crash on Interstate 24 near the Rutherford County line early Thursday morning. The crash happened in the eastbound lanes near mile marker 62 around 1:15 a.m. According to a release, a 45-year-old man and his 72-year-old father from Illinois, both of whom were in a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, died at the scene. Efforts are underway to notify their next-of-kin. Investigators believe traffic was slowing down on I-24 due to an approaching construction zone.  Multiple vehicles were merging over to the far left lane of travel when Daniel Caravaca-Bonilla, 25, drove a 2021 Ram 2500 into the rear of the Silverado at a high rate of speed. The Silverado crashed into an Infiniti QX50, which struck a Ford Fusion, which then collided with a Chevrolet Malibu, according to Metro police.  No one in those vehicles was seriously injured. Metro police reported there was no indication Caravaca-Bonilla braking prior to the collision.  During the investigation, open alcohol containers were located in Caravaca-Bonilla’s Ram truck, and he exhibited indicators of impairment but refused testing. A search warrant was obtained for his blood but results are pending. Caravaca-Bonilla was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide by intoxication, seven counts of aggravated assault, DUI, handgun possession while under the influence and an implied consent violation. The interstate was closed from the Old Hickory Boulevard exit to the Waldron Road exit. The roadway fully reopened to traffic just before 7 a.m. No additional information was immediately released.
