Father Blames Outdated Tech for Lack of Answers after Son's Helicopter Crash
A Marine helicopter crashed into a snowy mountain peak in Southern California killing all five service members. The crash occurred during a routine training mission and in the midst of a winter storm. Pilot error was identified as the main cause, with icing conditions and low cloud cover contributing. However, because the helicopter lacked a crash survivable flight data recorder, crucial flight data was missing, hindering the investigation. The absence of this technology led to uncertainties regarding the exact cause of the crash. The investigation found that modernizing the Marine Corps helicopters with updated technology is deemed cost-prohibitive due to the remaining service life of the aircraft. On the positive side, the newest CH-53K King Stallion helicopters are equipped with the necessary technology. The father of one of the deceased service members pushed for the incorporation of updated federal technology to prevent similar incidents, citing the importance of accurate data and the tragedy of losing loved ones in accidents that might have been preventable with new technology.
