Fatal wrong-way crash on Turnpike in Pompano Beach
A tragic incident occurred early Monday on the Florida Turnpike in Pompano Beach, resulting in the loss of two lives. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred around 1 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Atlantic Boulevard. The driver of an Acura TL sedan was traveling in the wrong direction and collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz A220. The impact caused the Acura to spin, hit a concrete barrier, and catch fire. Both drivers, one from Jensen Beach and the other a 19-year-old from Orlando, sadly did not survive. A 22-year-old passenger from Key West in the Mercedes-Benz was hospitalized at North Broward Medical Center. The crash investigation led to the closure of northbound lanes between Commercial Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard for several hours. Authorities are working to understand the circumstances behind this tragic accident. Another fatal wrong-way crash occurred in May on the Sawgrass Expressway in Sunrise, where a woman driving in the wrong direction collided with a tractor-trailer, resulting in her death. Two others involved in the crash sustained non-life-threatening injuries and the driver of the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries.
