
Fatal wrong-way crash on I-80 leaves Altoona man dead, three injured
Early Friday morning, a tragic wrong-way crash on I-80 near Altoona resulted in the death of an Altoona man and serious injuries to three others. Emergency responders, including multiple agencies, were called to the scene of the head-on collision at the 140.7 mile marker on eastbound I-80. The crash involved three vehicles, each sustaining significant damage. One of the drivers, identified as 19-year-old Zachary Scothorn of Altoona, was driving his Toyota pickup truck in the wrong direction and collided with an eastbound Dodge pickup truck before being struck by an eastbound Mercedes van. Unfortunately, Scothorn did not survive the crash, and three others were hospitalized with serious injuries. The eastbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene. Investigators, including the Iowa State Patrol, are still determining the cause of the accidents. Additionally, a deputy with the Polk County Sheriff's Office sustained minor injuries when his patrol vehicle was rear-ended while providing traffic control at the scene.
