Fatal wrong-way crash on Highway 101 in Monterey County leaves 2 dead, 4 injured

A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening in Monterey County when a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on U.S. Highway 101 caused a three-vehicle collision resulting in the death of two individuals and injuries to four others, according to authorities. The California Highway Patrol reported that the collision occurred on southbound Highway 101 near the Chualar River Road overcrossing. Further investigation revealed that a white Kia SUV, driven by a 41-year-old man from Salinas and carrying three passengers, was driving north in the southbound lanes and collided with a black Honda sedan driven by a 46-year-old resident of Arizona. This initial collision then led to a second crash involving a white Toyota sedan, the CHP stated. The two drivers involved in the fatal collision were pronounced dead at the scene, while the three Kia passengers sustained various injuries and were taken to a hospital. The Toyota driver was also hospitalized with minor injuries. The identities of the deceased have not yet been disclosed, pending notification of their families by the Monterey County Coroner's Office. The CHP is actively investigating the incident and has not determined if alcohol played a role. They are urging anyone with relevant information to reach out to the Monterey Area office at (831) 770-8000 or email [email protected].
