
Fatal wrong-way crash in Dane County; 1 fatality, 4 injured, 2 arrested for OWI
Tragically, one person has lost their life and four others were injured in a wrong-way crash on I-39 in Dane County early Sunday morning, July 20. The Wisconsin State Patrol was called to the scene just after midnight at mile marker 125 on northbound I-39 near DeForest after reports of a potential head-on collision. An SUV traveling the wrong way in the northbound lanes collided with another SUV heading northbound. The wrong-way SUV caught fire, resulting in the death of a passenger in the other vehicle. The driver was airlifted with injuries, while the wrong-way SUV driver was hospitalized and later arrested for impaired driving. In a separate incident during the investigation, a secondary crash occurred involving a southbound sedan colliding with a Deforest Police squad car with its emergency lights activated. Both sedan occupants sustained injuries and were also arrested for impaired operation. Identity disclosures are pending notification of next of kin.
