Fatal wrong-way collision on Turnpike in Pompano Beach, as reported by FHP
Early Monday morning, a tragic accident on the Florida Turnpike in Pompano Beach resulted in the death of two individuals. The collision occurred in the northbound lanes near Atlantic Boulevard at approximately 1 a.m. Authorities reported that a driver in an Acura TL was traveling south in the northbound lanes when they crashed head-on into a Mercedes-Benz A220. The impact caused the Acura to spin, hit a concrete barrier, and catch fire. Both the Acura driver from Jensen Beach and the 19-year-old Mercedes-Benz driver from Orlando lost their lives in the crash. A 22-year-old passenger from Key West in the Mercedes-Benz was hospitalized for treatment. The investigation led to the closure of northbound Turnpike lanes from Commercial Boulevard to Atlantic Boulevard for several hours while authorities looked into the cause of the tragedy. Tragically, this incident echoes a similar wrong-way collision that took the life of a 37-year-old woman on the Sawgrass Expressway in Sunrise in May. In that case, the woman, who was driving south in the northbound lanes, collided with a tractor-trailer, resulting in her death as well as injuries to two others. The tractor-trailer driver suffered minor injuries.
